How to Unclog a Downspout Most Effectively and Quickly

Gutter downspout can frequently be clogged up by dirt and debris such as small pieces of broken branches and leaves, which can end up building up inside the downspout and either preventing water from flowing through entirely, or just clogging it partially, and cause a need for Centennial roofing cleanup crew.

The most straightforward way to unclog a gutter downspout is with the use of a narrow garden trowel, which can be inserted into the top and bottom parts of the downspout, to remove any dirt and debris that’s close to the surface. Start with the bottom, and then insert a water hose at the top to see if it did the trick. Just make sure to direct the water away from any garden drains to prevent debris from flowing into them as well.

If it’s still clogged, consider using the hose itself. Wrap the top of the downspout into a towel to increase pressure, and insert the hose with the towel wrapped around it, then ask a helper to turn on the water. Make sure you are secure first, and use a safety harness to avoid being pushed back by the momentum of the hose, if the water pressure creates too much force. If the hose method doesn’t work, you can also consider using handheld auger or a sewer jetter, to remove the debris more effectively.

As a preventive measure, you should also consider installing gutter guards and downspout strainers, so that future clogs can be prevented and you can avoid all the effort required to unclog your gutters.
